Ear Irrigation (Modern Ear Syringing)

Low-pressure, warm-water flush - the safe, modern replacement for old-style ear syringing.

Controlled pressure 15–30 mins Either One or Both ears

When Irrigation is the right choice

  • No history of perforated eardrum, ear surgery, or grommets.
  • Patients who prefer a alternative method to Microsuction.
  • We'll always start with an otoscopic check - if Irrigation isn't safe for you, we'll use Microsuction instead, at no extra cost.

What to expect

  1. Otoscopic examination of both ears to confirm Irrigation is safe and appropriate.
  2. Warm water at body temperature is gently introduced at controlled, low pressure.
  3. The softened wax is flushed out into a small basin - most patients feel immediate relief.
  4. A second otoscopic check confirms the canal is clear, followed by aftercare advice.

FAQs

Is ear Irrigation the same as ear syringing?

It's the modern, safer version. Traditional metal-syringe syringing was withdrawn from the NHS because of the risk of injury. Today's electronic irrigators use controlled, low-pressure warm water - gentler and more effective.

Do I need to use olive oil before ear Irrigation?

Yes - we recommend olive oil drops twice a day for 3–5 days before your appointment. This softens the wax and makes the treatment quicker and more comfortable.

Who shouldn't have ear Irrigation?

Patients with a perforated eardrum, recent ear surgery, grommets or a history of middle-ear problems should choose Microsuction instead. We'll check this at the start of every appointment.

How much does ear Irrigation cost?

£45 for a single ear or £85 for both ears, including the otoscopic check, treatment and aftercare advice - no extra charge for home visits within our service area.
