Ear care guide
Why home earwax remedies often fail - and what actually works
If your ear feels blocked, the internet is full of "quick fixes" - olive oil, syringes, candles, hydrogen peroxide. Most of them don't shift a real blockage, and some can damage your ear. Here's an honest UK guide to what works, what doesn't, and why a single professional appointment is almost always the fastest, safest route.
My Advice
There is no quick DIY method to assist in removing compacted earwax. The safest option is to book an appointment with a trained practitioner to clear your ears effectively with NHS Grade equipment, minimising the risk of further issues.
- Microsuction - water-free removal under a microscope, using the gold standard method.
- Irrigation - gentle low-pressure warm-water flush used specifically for compacted earwax.
Why home remedies are often ineffective:
Olive oil drops work well to soften mild earwax build up, However the benefits can be limited:
- •They may only soften surface wax. Compacted earwax often builds up deep within the ear canal, sometimes causing pressure to the eardrum. It is unlikely that this type of wax will migrate towards the outer ear without professional intervention.
- •Hearing could deteriorate further. Earwax absorbs olive oil drops causing it to swell. After 3-4 days of using drops, you may continue to feel pressure within the ear with little alleviation of symptoms.
- •Treatment is not targeted. As you're unable to see inside the ear, it can be difficult to understand signs and symptoms, most of which can be solved by a trained practitioner in a single appointment.
Methods to avoid
- ✕Cotton buds NICE and the NHS advise against the use of cotton buds as they push wax deeper into the ear canal causing compacted buildup.
- ✕Ear candles. There is no clinical evidence that ear candles work effectively, however, there is documented risk of burns and wax deposits on the eardrum.
- ✕Bulb syringes Home syringing methods can cause perforation to the eardrum as it is difficult to control water pressure. They could also exacerbate undiagnosed infection or a pre-existing perforation.
- ✕Ear drops containing Hydrogen Peroxide Not advised for routine home use in the UK, as they can irritate the ear canal and worsen symptoms.
Consider this service if:
Don't keep persisting with home methods if any of these apply:
- Ear pain, Irritation or Itchiness
- Sudden or Persistent hearing loss, vertigo, or tinnitus.
- Diabetes or issues with a weakened immune system.
- Drops haven't shifted the blockage after 3-4 days
- Due to travel or fly imminently
